GC to host annual Distinguished Lecture Series featuring Dr. Stephanie Cole

Grayson College will host its annual Distinguished Lecture Series featuring University of Texas at Arlington Associate History Professor Dr. Stephanie Cole on April 18 at 7:00PM in the CWL Auditorium on campus. This year’s lecture topic will be, “Citizens at Last? How Women [Eventually] Got the Vote in Texas.”

Dr. Cole’s expertise is in women’s history, but she also teaches courses on work and leisure, and on changes in gender, race, sex and marriage in the United States. Her co-edited collection of essays, Texas Women: Their Histories, Their Lives, won the Liz Carpenter Prize for the best book in Texas women’s history in 2015.

Her other publications include articles on households and household workers in the antebellum urban South, domestic violence in the nineteenth century, and interracial marriage in the early twentieth-century Dallas. Her article “Servants and Slaves in Louisville” published in Ohio Valley History in 2011 won the Richard C. Wade Award for the best article in a two-year period in that journal.

A longtime advocate of getting good history into the public realm, Dr. Cole currently sits on the boards of the Texas State Historical Association, the Women of the Southwest Archives at SMU, and the Sewanee Project on Race and Reconciliation. The event is free and open to the public.
